Located on the eastern part of the Iberian Peninsula, this autonomous community has a rich historical background. It was officially established in 1982 when its Statute of Autonomy was approved and has been recognized as a historical nationality since 2006, in accordance with the provisions of the national constitution.
The majority of this region coincides with the historical Kingdom that existed from the 13th to the 18th century as part of a larger monarchy. Over the years, it has been referred to by various names. In the late 19th century, it was known as the Valencian Region, and in the 1960s, the unofficial term "Valencian Country" began to be used. Following the autonomy statute in 1982, the name of this community became widely adopted, although the term "Valencia" can sometimes lead to confusion with the capital city and province.
Covering an area of 23,255 square kilometers, it is the eighth largest autonomous community in the country, comprising three provinces. It shares borders with several regions, including Catalonia and Aragón to the north, Castilla-La Mancha and Aragón to the west, and the Region of Murcia to the south. The coastal territory also includes the Columbretes archipelago, Tabarca Island, and other smaller islands, in addition to a unique exclave that is entirely separated from the main landmass.
